New York Yankees - Defending Champions of Professional Baseball
With 27 World Series championships in their possession, the New York Yankees are the proud defending World Champions of the Major League Baseball. The Yankees represent the East Division of the American League since the team's establishment in 1901. Leaders of the league in terms of revenue and championships, the team is known for some of the most celebrated baseball players.
A Little Background
The team was founded as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, among the eight charter franchises of the American League. Before this, a team of Baltimore was excluded from the National League, as the league's size reduced from 12 to 8. In 1903, the team moved to New York under the new name of the New York Highlanders. After 10 years in 1913, the team came to be known as the New York Yankees. There has been no decline in the popularity of the team through the 2009 season. The New York Yankees tickets generate high revenue and the famous YES Network television channel has been dedicated to the Yankees.
