A Little Background
It was in 1866 that the professional baseball had its first club in the form of the Cincinnati Red Stockings. After the best players of the team left it, a brand new team with same name became the member of the newly formed National League in 1876. After the second Red Stockings team was expelled for violations, the third team with same name joined the American Association in 1882. However, the team left the association for the National League in 1889. In 1890, the name of the team was changed to the Cincinnati Reds. Considering the fear of its name being associated with Communism, the club changed its name to the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1953. However, it again became the Cincinnati Reds in 1958.
World Series Titles
In 1919, their first World Series title was won by the Reds against the Chicago White Sox. The Detroit Tigers were defeated by the Red in the year 1940 to win their second World Series title. After a huge gap, the team re-emerged as winners of the World Series titles for two consecutive years in 1975 and 1976. In 1975, they won against the Boston Red Sox and against the New York Yankees in 1976. The period from 1970 to 1976 earned a new title for the team as 'the Big Red Machine'. The fifth and the final World Series title came for the Reds in 1990 against the Oakland Athletics.
